Overview
Benign skin lesions are common non-cancerous growths that may develop for various reasons. While they are typically harmless, many patients seek removal for aesthetic reasons, discomfort, or preventive care. At Dr. Wilson’s Plastic Surgery Office, we offer a range of treatments using advanced techniques to ensure minimal scarring and optimal results.
Types of Benign Skin Lesions:
Moles (Nevi): Dark or pigmented skin growths. These are typically benign but can be removed for cosmetic reasons or if there’s concern about changes in size, shape, or color. Suspicious moles are evaluated thoroughly before removal.
Seborrheic Keratosis: Wart-like, raised growths that can appear anywhere on the body. Though benign, they are often removed for cosmetic reasons or if they cause irritation.
Lipomas: Soft, fatty lumps located just under the skin, usually painless and slow-growing. They can be excised if they become uncomfortable or for aesthetic improvement.
Cysts: Fluid-filled sacs that form beneath the skin, commonly on the face, neck, or back. They can become infected or unsightly and may be removed through a small incision.
Dermatofibromas: Firm, red or brown nodules commonly found on the legs. They are typically harmless but may be excised if they cause irritation or discomfort.
Advanced Removal Techniques:
Surgical Excision: The lesion is removed with a careful incision, minimizing tissue damage and scarring. If necessary, stitches are used to close the wound, and the tissue may be sent for pathology testing.
Serial Excision: For larger lesions, gradual removal in stages reduces skin tension, ultimately leading to smaller and less visible scars.
Scarless Surgery: In select cases, non-suturing methods and micro-excision techniques can be used to leave nearly invisible scars.
Cryotherapy: Involves freezing smaller lesions with liquid nitrogen, particularly effective for warts and seborrheic keratosis.
Laser Treatment: Used for superficial lesions, this non-invasive approach can minimize tissue damage and scarring while effectively removing the lesion.
Geometric Closure Techniques: For larger or more complex excisions, geometric suturing methods are employed to distribute tension evenly across the wound, promoting faster healing and reducing scar visibility.
Post-Procedure Care:
Wound Management: Proper wound care includes cleaning and applying prescribed ointments to ensure optimal healing.
Sutures: If stitches are used, a follow-up visit is scheduled to remove them and assess the healing process. Avoid physical activities that could put tension on the treated area.
Scar Minimization: Post-surgery, silicone gels or other topical treatments may be recommended to reduce scar formation.
Sun Protection: Treated areas should be protected from direct sunlight for several months to prevent hyperpigmentation or scar darkening.
