Blepharoplasty

Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty)

Overview
Blepharoplasty, commonly known as eyelid surgery, is a cosmetic procedure aimed at correcting signs of aging around the eyes, restoring a more refreshed and youthful appearance. This surgery can be performed on both the upper and lower eyelids, addressing concerns such as sagging skin, puffiness, and under-eye bags. Dr. Wilson, provides personalized surgical plans to meet each patient’s unique needs.

Indications for Procedure

Blepharoplasty is typically indicated for:

  • Heavy, drooping upper eyelids with excess skin.

  • Sagging, wrinkled lower eyelids.

  • Fat herniation causing “bags” under the eyes or puffiness in the upper eyelids.

  • Lacrimal gland ptosis, affecting tear drainage and potentially leading to further eyelid issues.

This procedure is popular among both women and men, typically starting in their forties, but it can also be performed on younger patients if hereditary concerns such as fat pockets or drooping are present.

Procedure Overview

Blepharoplasty can be performed under local or general anesthesia, depending on the patient’s preferences and the complexity of the procedure. The surgery is generally conducted on an outpatient basis, allowing patients to return home the same day.

  • Upper Blepharoplasty: Incisions are discreetly placed in the natural crease of the eyelid to remove excess skin and fat, correcting sagging that can obstruct vision or contribute to a fatigued appearance.

  • Lower Blepharoplasty: Incisions are typically positioned just below the lash line or within the inner eyelid for a scarless approach, aimed at reducing puffiness and dark circles by addressing fat deposits and tightening the skin beneath the eyes.

Additional Procedures

  • Canthopexy/ Canthoplasty: A surgical technique designed to strengthen and stabilize or even reshape the outer corner of the eye. It is often used to address eyelid sagging or drooping due to aging and is commonly performed alongside blepharoplasty for a more comprehensive rejuvenation.

  • Correction of Ectropion/Entropion: These conditions involve the eyelid turning outward (ectropion) or inward (entropion), which can cause discomfort and potential damage to the eye. Surgical correction involves repositioning the eyelid to restore normal function and protect the eye from irritation.

  • Cat Eyes with Tension Threads: For patients seeking a non-surgical solution, this procedure offers a temporary lift to achieve a more angular, elongated eye shape. Utilizing biocompatible threads, it subtly tightens the skin around the eyes, enhancing their natural contour without invasive surgery.

Post-Operative Care

After the procedure, patients can expect:

  • Immediate Recovery: Initial swelling and bruising are common. Cold compresses can help minimize discomfort.

  • Follow-Up Visits: Dr. Wilson will schedule follow-up appointments to monitor healing and remove sutures if necessary.

  • Activity Restrictions: Patients are advised to avoid strenuous activities and heavy lifting for a 2 weeks. Wearing sunglasses can protect the eyes from sunlight and wind during the healing process.

  • Medication: Pain relief and antibiotic prescriptions may be provided to manage discomfort and prevent infection.

Expected Results

Patients can typically expect to see a rejuvenated appearance around the eyes, with a more youthful and rested look. While results vary, many experience long-lasting improvements, enhancing facial harmony and confidence.
